Brain White Mater Differences Between Normal Subjects and ALS Patients Assessed by Diffusion Tensor Imaging

چکیده
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is characterized by progressive degeneration of motor neurons. A reliable, noninvasive, and objective imaging method of upper motor neuron involvement is critical for the early diagnosis and monitoring of disease progression in ALS patients. Magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has been used to show differences in fractional anisotropy (FA) of water diffusion in brain white matter in ALS patients compared to normal controls of the same age group. In this paper, we studied the spatial extent of the brain areas affected in ALS patients using DTI. Our preliminary results show significantly higher FA values in normal subjects compared to ALS patients localized in the left and right frontal and temporal lobes. Differentiation of Edematous, Tumoral and Normal Areas of Brain Using Diffusion Tensor and Neurite Orientation Dispersion and Density Imaging
Background: Presurigical planning for glioma tumor resection and radiotherapy treatment require proper delineation of tumoral and peritumoral areas of brain. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is the most common mathematical model applied for diffusion weighted MRI data. Neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI) is another mathematical model for DWI data modeling. Objective: We stud...
متن کاملEvaluation of White Matter Tracts in Autistic Individuals: A Review of Diffusion Tensor Imaging Studies
Introduction: Many cognitive and social deficits in autism are caused by abnormal functional connections between brain networks, which are manifested by impaired integrity of white matter tracts. White matter tracts are like the "highways" of the brain, which allow fast and efficient communication in different areas of the brain. The purpose of this article is to review the results of autism st...
متن کاملMicrostructural White Matter Changes Underlying Cognitive and Behavioural Impairment in ALS – An In Vivo Study Using DTI
BACKGROUND A relevant fraction of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) exhibit a fronto-temporal pattern of cognitive and behavioural disturbances with pronounced deficits in executive functioning and cognitive control of behaviour. Structural imaging shows a decline in fronto-temporal brain areas, but most brain imaging studies did not evaluate cognitive status. We investigated mi...
متن کاملThe Benefits and implementations of Diffusion tensor imaging and Neural Fiber Tractography in Brain Surgery
Background and Aim: The methods for detecting brain activation with fMRI, MRI provides a way to measure the anatomical connections which enable lightning-fast communication among neurons that specialize in different kinds of brain functions. Diffusion tensor imaging is able to measure the direction of bundles of the axonal fibers which are all aligned. Besides mapping white matter fiber tracts,...
متن کاملDiffusion tensor imaging in sporadic and familial (D90A SOD1) forms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
BACKGROUND The basis of heterogeneity in the clinical presentation and rate of progression of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is poorly understood. OBJECTIVES To use diffusion tensor imaging as a measure of axonal pathologic features in vivo in ALS and to compare a homogeneous form of familial ALS (homozygous D90A SOD1 [superoxide dismutase 1]) with sporadic ALS. DESIGN Cross-sectional ...
